Using the art form as a starting point, Kaleidoscopes: Contemporary Portraiture presents interpretations of the ways with which the human experience may be understood and transformed. Each portrait is an expression of the artist’s vision altogether, they form a kaleidoscopic view of likeness at once familiar and destabilizing, a reflection. Appreciating art from the viewer’s perspective entails trying to understand what the artist had in mind in their creation and what responses the viewer develops when looking at the work.

Working alla-prima, we’ll begin in black and white paint, to help us grasp tonal concepts. Working from live models, we will explore the basic proportions of the head drawing convincing features using tone to describe form and structure and all that goes into making a lively, engaging portrait. Viewers will hopefully be encouraged to become themselves active art world participants–engaging with artists and collecting their works.Phaidon first tackled the history of self-portraiture in 1936 (did you know the publisher was that old) with their book Five Hundred Self-Portraits: From Antique Times to the Present Day.

Questions are encouraged at all times. There are demonstrations every step of the way.With clear step-by-step, hands-on instructions, a wealth of technical tips, continuous demonstrations, and personal instruction at each student’s easel, David will show students how to approach the challenges of portraiture with confidence. The third day gives us more time to consider composition, accurately draw the figure in paint and consider the problem of hands. Students will then work on a head-and-shoulders colour study.
